5 GREAT TUSCAN ADVENTURES

13 July 2021 • Simon Banks

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most popular destinations, with millions passing through the region every year. It’s easy to see why it’s so in demand – there’s a little something for everyone here. Whether you’re spending time in Florence or darting down country lanes in a classic car, Tuscany is a place where you can enjoy a quintessential Italian getaway, and we’ve got five fun things to do during your Tuscan adventure.

1) Spend a day in Livorno

Livorno is a popular port city in Tuscany and a great place to arrive by ferry, which you can book with Ferryscanner. Upon arrival, head to Fortezza Nuova, a historic building constructed in the mid-to-late 1500s. It’s an imposing structure that was once used to defend the city.

After enjoying historical sights, spend some time at the port. Here, you will be greeted by pastel-colored buildings, canals where you can go for a stroll and an aquarium. Round your visit up with a trip to Via Grande, one of the busiest streets in Livorno filled with restaurants and shops.

2) Visit Florence

Florence is the capital of Tuscany and also happens to be one of the most popular destinations in the region. People flock here from all over the world to soak up the history, beautiful architecture, and fantastic food.

It’s a great place to visit for a few days or on a whistle-stop tour if you’re exploring the wider region. Make sure you see the Duomo, a cathedral and the most important landmark in the city, and Ponte Vecchio bridge, which is the oldest bridge in Florence and a popular tourist attraction.

3) Visit the island of Giglio

Head out to the Tuscan archipelago to experience the island of Giglio. It’s an unspoiled destination that doesn’t get too many tourists visiting. As a result, it feels like an undiscovered gem just waiting to be explored.

Wander the island and visit the citadels, stone villages, and local restaurants before going on a mountain hike to take in sweeping views. There’s also a range of beaches where you can go for a dip and enjoy local watersports.

4) Discover the vineyards

Wine is synonymous with Tuscany, and wine-tasting is one of the most popular activities in the region. You can go on professional tours with guides who will give you the lowdown on the wines in the areas while treating you to a meal at a local restaurant.

Or if you fancy a more intimate experience, visit one of the small family producers to see if they will show you around. Avignonesi is perhaps the most popular vineyard with its production of Vino Nobile, one of the best wines in the region.

5) Go truffle tasting

Another famous Tuscan produce, truffles are all the rage in Tuscany. Don’t miss the opportunity to do a spot of truffle tasting while enjoying the much lower prices compared to the rest of Europe.

You can even book a truffle hunting tour that finishes with you sampling the finest truffles while tucking into a plate of pasta. The small town of San Miniato is one of the best places to try some truffles, and there are plenty of tours where you can discover the area and sample some tasty treats.
