Access to most of Greece‘s Aegean islands often happens from Attica. However, what about all the people that live in Thessaloniki and the rest of the northern region? As long as the weather permits, there are tons of great island destinations to visit from there as well. Read this article to discover your options.
A favorite destination among the islands that can be visited from Northern Greece is the beautiful destination of Lemnos (also written as Limnos). You can board the ferry on Saturday evening and return to Thessaloniki the following Saturday afternoon. Stroll around the cobbled streets under the castle of Myrina, the beautiful mansions, and fishing boats in the harbor of Mudros. Visit the Sanctuary of Kabeirios and the cave of Philoctetes. The biggest highlight of this island is that it’s got the only desert in Europe.
This is the best time of year to visit Chios because it is the season of Mastic cleaning. If you decide to visit Mastichochoria you will be able to sit alongside the grandmothers who are cleaning the mastic outside their courtyard gates. The natural wealth and beauty of this island are impressive. Chora has incredibly detailed architecture and Kampos wow with its unique mansions.
Another of the islands that you can easily visit from Northern Greece is Samothrace (also written as Samothraki). In less than two hours from the port of Alexandroupolis, you can find yourself here relaxing by a waterfall. Situated directly across from Alexandroupoli, this island is surrounded by greenery and full of options for hiking. The highlight here would definitely be the Sanctuary of the Gods and the waterfalls you can find in various parts of the island!
From the port of Kavala, you can easily visit two incredible islands. The furthest of these is called Agios Efstratios, (or for the locals – Ai Stratis) it’s a gem of an island ideal for those who want to relax away from the crowds. Make sure to visit the sea caves of Agios Stratis, as it is said that the Mediterranean monk seal (monachus monachus) lives here.
The last of the islands we recommend visiting from Northern Greece is called Lesvos! From beautiful Kavala, you can book a cabin on the ferry and sail to lovely Lesvos. Arriving at the port of Mytilene, Agios Therapos stands out from afar while a walk in the streets around Ermou is a must. The colorful Agiasos, the imposing sight of the icon of Archangel Michael in Mantamados, and the smell of fresh sardines from Kalloni, are waiting to welcome you.
