Mark your calendars! There are lots of fun things happening around Greece during the month of April. Here are some of the most exciting upcoming events.
During the first week of the month, the French Film Festival of Greece will hold its 22nd event in various cinemas across the country’s two largest cities, Athens and Thessaloniki. On April 2nd at 21:00 two talented violinists, Diana Tichchenko (from Ukraine) and Alena Baeva (from Russia) will perform together for the first time at the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklion in Crete. This will be a special concert of solidarity and humanity. Their goal is to prove that art can unite the world. Accompanying them will be other artists who wanted to join their creative forces together in support of world peace.
For three weeks in April, children and parents in Athens will come together during the weekends to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the Museum of Cycladic Art. Taking place this month in the Dodecanese is the International Marathon of Rhodes. This is the 7th year of this event, which is set on a unique coastal route next to the walls of the medieval city, offering a gorgeous view of the Aegean. Runners will travel 42,195 meters alongside the sparkling blue sea. This race attracts people from all over the globe and certainly makes the most of the history and culture of Rhodes.
The Thessaloniki Wine Show will take place at the port of Thessaloniki (specifically in Warehouse C) over the course of two days and will mainly be populated by professionals, traders, importers, buyers, and sommeliers of specific hotels and restaurants around Nothern Greece. However, it’s also going to be open to the wine-loving public and will have various stages and presentations.
The Poseidonion Grand Hotel is located on the island of Spetses, and this month they will host a fun three-day event called Weekend in Tweed. This gathering involves taking a journey through time that is full of outdoor activities and retro-themed moments. It’s a very cool and unusual way to soak up what Spetses has to offer.
The Poseidon Athens Half Marathon will be on April 17, and there will be many other races and events held simultaneously. This will be the 13th iteration of this event. All races will start and finish around the Cultural and Sports Centre of the Municipality of Paleo Faliro (SCMPF), in Flisvos Marina.
Easter is the biggest holiday of the year for the Greek Orthodox Church, and there are many traditions and events happening in the days leading up. On Easter Sunday, most people will be visiting family and friends, spending time outdoors, and eating lots of lamb, goat, and tsoureki bread. There is also the communal cracking of red hard-boiled eggs. While these are the standard Easter practices that exist, many Greek islands and villages have their own unique ways of celebrating.
The International Tour of Hellas is a significant global cycling event, that will be returning to Greece this year after a decade. The race will initially begin in Crete with the participation of 170 athletes representing over 20 professional and national teams. It will then continue on to mainland Greece and wrap up at the finish line in Ioannina. Parallel events before, during, and after the race will promote the benefits of cycling and encourage citizens to use bicycles as a safe, sustainable way to travel.
