In the south of the island, there are some villages that the locals call Mastichochoria. There is an abundance of mastic trees or otherwise known as schinos. It is the tree that produces the mastic of Chios. So from this tree, mastic is made into liqueur, gum, ouzo, liquor and a whole lot more. It is the gold of the island. It is the product that makes Chios known all over the world. A product of protected designation of origin and packed with nutrients. The “precious tear” produces not only edibles but also cosmetics.
If you have the pleasure of having a grandmother, then in her cupboards there is a jar of spoon sweets. 60% are from Chios as well. The famous Korakis spoon sweets (and not only) are the best selling sweets in Greece and not without reason. Cherry, bergamot, pistachio and several others. The tsipouro from Chios with the rich taste! It is a distillate of figs. Figs from Chios collected in August and spread out in the sun. After drying they will be put in barrels with water and yeast. The distillation process takes place in the autumn and the result is Souma Chios! A bottle of this unique spirit should be put in your cupboards.
I’ll close the list with the soft cheese Mastelo – the cheese that deserves to star on your Sunday tables! It took its name (mastelo) from the wooden bucket used by the island’s cheese makers to collect milk. You can find this soft cheese everywhere in big cities and you are sure to love it right away!
