Last August, the Greek island of Evia (specifically Limni Evias in the north) was one of the areas badly affected by forest fires.
Recently, local authorities collaborated with the Greek Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Climate Change in order to plant 4,000 trees as part of a two-pronged intensive forest regeneration effort. Starting back in February, high school students, local residents, agricultural organizations, and members of the Hellenic Fire Service all came together to help.
The first project involved the reforestation of 51 stremmas (12.6 acres) with 3,000 trees including pine, cypress, and carob. The budget for this was 48,650 euros, covered by the contractor Eren Groupe SA.
The second project involved the planting of another 1,000 trees, made possible by volunteers and a donation via We4all.
During an inspection visit to northern Evia, Greece‘s Deputy Environment Minister Giorgos Amyras participated in the reforestation activities by planting the first tree. He also inspected the anti-corrosion and anti-flood works carried out at Limni Evias.
