THE BEST DESTINATIONS IN CRETE

5 March 2022 • Simon Banks

Are you looking for the best destinations in Crete? You aren’t the only ones, as it’s often referred to as one of the best islands in Greece. It has a distinctive feel from many other Greek islands and is covered by beautiful beaches, remains of ancient civilization and mouth-watering spots to eat. But where can you experience the finest parts of the island? That’s the purpose of this guide, which features the best destinations in Crete.

Rethymnon

Rethymnon

For great beaches, sprawling scenery and traditional villages, head to Rethymnon. You can arrive here via ferry after booking your trip with Ferryscanner and get exploring. It resembles something out of a film set, with picturesque sights everywhere you look, whether it’s the colourful buildings around the harbour or the majestic mountains in the background. After spending some time on the sandy beaches, wander the mediaeval towns before stopping at one of the local restaurants for delicious local cuisine.

Elounda

Elounda

Elounda is known as one of the upmarket resorts in Crete. Here, you will find a collection of five-star luxury hotels often frequented by celebrities. As with any popular destination in Crete, there are beaches to laze on, nightlife to sample and markets to visit. If you find yourself feeling peckish, stop by one of the many tavernas, such as Taverna Leonidas, with its friendly staff and traditional Greek fare.

Samaria National Park

Samaria National Park

Samaria National Park is one of the best destinations in Crete if you feel like getting back to nature. It’s home to the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe. The park covers around 18km and takes six hours to hike – along your trail, expect to find numerous wildlife and plants as well as spectacular views of Crete’s landscapes. A trip to Samaria National Park is a chance to embrace natural beauty and enjoy Mother Nature’s work first-hand.

Heraklion

Heraklion

Often referred to as Iraklio by the locals, Heraklion is the capital of Crete and often a great starting point for your Greek adventure. There are impressive museums here, idyllic villages, vineyards and olive groves and beautifully restored buildings ready to catch the eye. Heraklion offers a gateway to several beaches, including Tobrouk Beach. It lies just 10km outside of the capital and is a popular spot with surfers and windsurfers, thanks to its Meltemi winds offering ideal watersports conditions.

Plaka

Plaka

You will find Plaka on the coast, near Agios. There’s a beautiful beach in this small village where you’re encouraged to lose track of time and admire paradise. Among the backstreets of Plaka, you will find boutique shops selling an assortment of items, traditional tavernas and bars where you can grab a drink or two. Plaka is also just a short journey to Agios, one of the livelier coastal towns in Crete.

The best destinations in Crete

It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of Crete, and we thoroughly recommend doing so. But there’s also an island to discover full of fun, vibrancy and history. So if Crete is on your travel list, make sure you visit the destinations in this guide and embrace an experience you’ll never forget.
