As one of the smaller, more secluded islands in the Cyclades, Anafi is perhaps overlooked compared to the likes of Santorini and Mykonos. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be on your list the next time you visit Greece. Indeed, you can discover plenty here, and we’ve put together five of the best things to do in Anafi.
Anafi is a remote volcanic island located on the southeastern side of the Cyclades. Your best chance of visiting involves riding a ferry, which you can book with Ferryscanner. In 2011, Anafi had a population of just 211 people. Today, that number is closer to 300, which shows just how remote it is.
Anafi is compact, so you can see most of what the island has to offer with minimal effort. It’s also largely untouched by the mass tourism found in nearby Santorini, meaning you can explore away from the crowds. From the daunting Kalamos Rock that sits on the southeastern side of the island to the picturesque Monastery of Kalamiotissa, Anafi has plenty of photo-worthy spots to admire. Other prominent landmarks include the Church of Agios Spyridon and the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, which offers fantastic views out to sea.
One of the best things to do in Anafi involves stopping by a local restaurant to enjoy authentic cuisine. Endochora is popular, thanks to its homemade meat dishes and zucchini straight from the owner’s garden. Another spot is Astrahan, which serves up homemade food and sweeping views of Anafi port. You should also check out Glaros, the oldest bar in Anafi.
There are a few beaches in Anafi where you can soak up some sun and relax in the peaceful surroundings. Katsouni is a nice sandy beach with clear waters, while Roukouna Beach is an unkempt spot where you can unwind and even go camping. Finally, check out Livoskopos Beach. Located on the north side of the island, Livoskopos is small and secluded, to the point where you may be the only person there. It’s like having your own personal beach.
Agios Nikolaos is located on the south side of the island and is the main port of Anafi. Take some time to wander around, admiring the white stone houses before renting a sea kayak and going for a ride on the azure waters that border the island.
Mount Kalmos awaits if you consider yourself an adventurer, and it’s easily one of the best things to do in Anafi. Take in the island’s natural beauty on your way to the summit, which is a little over 460 metres high. Once you reach the top, stop to see the breathtaking views and snap a picture of the island’s quaint villages. On a clear day, you can even see Santorini.
For such a small island, there’s more than enough to keep you occupied during your visit to Anafi. You can see pretty much everything in a day (or two if you want to take your time) while admiring one of the few remote Greek islands that features plenty of natural beauty.
