THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN NICE THIS SUMMER

25 June 2022 • Simon Banks

Thanks to the year-round sun, Nice is a destination you can visit regardless of the season. But there’s no denying that it springs to life in the summer, thanks to its buzzy atmosphere in boutique hotels, quaint streets, restaurants, and bars. If you’re considering visiting this charming French city on the French Riviera, read on and discover the best things to do in Nice this summer.

Promenade des Anglais

Promenade des Anglais – the best things to do in Nice

There’s only one place to start, and it’s with the Promenade des Anglais. This seven-kilometre stretch was paid for by wealthy English expats that had a penchant for strolling along the seafront back in the 1800s. Fast-forward hundreds of years, and taking a walk on the Promenade des Anglais is just as popular now as it was then. Soak up the sights of the Mediterranean sea as you wander along, stopping at one of the many seafront bars and restaurants. It’s also the location of the Nice Carnival, which takes place every February.

Visit La Colline du Château

La Colline du Château – the best things to do in Nice

La Colline du Château translates to rock hill in English and is located on the Eastern side of the Promenade des Anglais. A trip here affords the chance to take in sweeping views of Old Nice and its port while snapping a picture or two. You can even see the Alps in the distance or simply go for a stroll, enjoying the waterfall and green settings. La Colline du Château is accessible via its stairs, or there’s a free lift if you don’t fancy the walk.

See the Old Port

Old Port Nice

There are eight ports in Nice where commercial and passenger arrive. But the Old Port is where you should visit first after stepping off the boat. It was built in the 18th century, and as well as being a popular tourist spot, it’s one of the French Riviera’s primary infrastructural hubs, welcoming ships operated by ferry companies. The trip to the port also happens to be one of the best things to do in Nice and is full of vibrancy and buzz. Take in the local surroundings with the colourful buildings before visiting a market selling local products.

Explore the streets of Vieux Nice

Vieux Nice

Wander the streets of Vieux Nice in the old town and experience the city’s Italian past. The winding, narrow streets lead to architectural marvels, such as Cathedrale Ste-Reparate and the 17th-century Palais Lascaris, which currently houses a musical instrument museum. A visit to Vieux Nice provides you with charm, impressive architecture and the historical side of the city.

Marinières Beach

Marinières Beach

Just 15 minutes east of Nice, you will find Marinières Beach, one of the most popular spots on the French Riviera. It’s located in Villefranche-sur-Mer and is a free, public beach, a rarity in the area. While there are no soft sands to laze on, the tiny pebbles offer a good compromise. Plus, you can visit all the nearby bars and restaurants buzzing during the warmer months of the year.
