If you’re an EU citizen planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2025 by ferry or shuttle, there’s a new rule in place — the UK ETA for EU citizens is now required.
As of April 2025, EU citizens now also need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the United Kingdom — just like travelers from many non-EU countries. This is part of a broader UK government program to digitize border control.
The ETA is a new travel requirement for visitors who do not need a visa to enter the UK. You’ll need it if you’re coming for:
Tourism
Visiting friends or family
Short business trips or transiting through the UK
It applies to EU nationals, as well as travelers from countries like the US, Australia, Canada, and many more.
British and Irish citizens, as well as EU citizens with settled or pre-settled status in the UK, do not need an ETA.
The UK ETA for EU and non-EU citizens is easy to obtain online, and is valid for more than one trip.
Cost: £16 per applicant (from 9th April 2025)
Validity: 2 years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first)
Apply online: Through the UK ETA website or app
Approval time: Most are processed in minutes, but you should apply at least 3 days in advance
Without an approved ETA, you won’t be allowed to board your ferry, shuttle, or flight to the UK.
If you’re planning to cross the Channel by ferry or shuttle, make sure to get your ETA sorted before departure. At Ferryscanner, we help you find and book ferry routes from mainland Europe to the UK with ease — but the ETA is now a must-have part of your journey.
