WHERE TO STAY IN MYKONOS

5 July 2022 • Simon Banks

As far as luxury Greek islands go, Mykonos is at the top of the list. It’s an icon of high-end travel, with holidaymakers soaking up the rich culture, five-star hotels and beautiful landscapes. But if you’re planning a trip to this Cycladic island, where should you stay? Here, we’re looking at where to stay in Mykonos so you can make the most of your trip to this slice of Greek paradise.

Little Venice

Little venice

A popular neighbourhood in Mykonos, Little Venice sits just below the Old Port and personifies the best of the island. It’s home to a wide variety of stylish hotels and restaurants, as well as winding streets where you can enjoy a pleasant stroll and pop in and out of the boutiques. Many spots in Little Venice offer views over the ocean, and places like the Paraportiani Orthodox Church and Rarity Gallery are worth visiting to take in some history and culture.

Mykonos Town

Mykonos Town

The largest town on the island is also one of the most popular. Streets are closed off to traffic during the daytime, so visitors and residents can stroll about without any cars while admiring the whitewashed cubic houses that are so iconic with Greek islands. But it’s at night when the town comes to life. If you’re here for the parties, then Mykonos Town is the place to be. The bars and nightclubs are open until late, with live DJs playing spinning tunes. When the party’s finished, head back to one of the boutique hotels as the sun comes up.

Old Port of Mykonos

Old Port of Mykonos

Sometimes referred to as downtown Mykonos, the Old Port is one of the first places tourists go after arriving by ferry in Mykonos. It’s also a great place to stay, thanks to the lush hotels and apartment rentals where you can get five-star treatment. There are museums, such as the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, to explore. Landmarks like Mantos Mavrogenous Statue to see. And plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy the local cuisine.

Ornos

Ornos

Just two kilometres southwest of Mykonos Town, Ornos is a scenic fishing village with a harbour full of luxury yachts. Indeed, it’s one of the most upmarket spots in Mykonos and has its fair share of five-star boutique hotels. Ornos is situated between two beaches, which is ideal for sun-seekers. Back in the village, you’ll find tavernas lining the streets, quaint cafes and friendly locals ready to welcome guests into their shops, bars and restaurants with open arms.

Platys Gialos

Platys Gialos

Located in the south of Mykonos, Platys Gialos is a coastal village in high demand with tourists. It’s home to Platys Beach, one of the most popular on the island thanks to its clear waters and golden sand. When you’re not lazing the day away under the sun, try one of the many local spots serving fresh seafood or head to a bar for a refreshing cocktail.
