Corsica

Covering an area of 8722 square kilometers, Corsica is a French island in the Mediterranean Sea, situated west of mainland Italy. The southern regions of the island, especially Bonifacio, which lies only 16km from Sardinia, have a noticeably Italian vibe. Several tourists purchase ferry tickets to Corsica for boats leaving Santa Teresa Gallura, choosing to cross off two countries from their bucket list during one vacation. Bonifacio’s 9th-century Citadel, an imposing sight high up on a hill, is where time slows down. A place to purposely get lost, the snaking streets of the centuries-old neighborhoods are overflowing with antiquated surprises, from ornate doors and windows to family-run cafes with handpainted signs. Don’t forget to take King Aragon’s Stairway, 187 stone steps carved into the rock, on your way down to the port. The livelier part of the city has a continuous movement of luxury yachts and local fishing boats, Porte is the best place for a delicious meal on the seafront.

Corsica’s capital Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon. His ancestral house, Maison Bonaparte, is now a museum. Art lovers will find the collection of Italian paintings at Musée Fesch to their liking. During the summer months, a boat trip around the harbor comes highly recommended.

You can also book ferry to Corsica through Ferryscanner for Bastia and Ile Rousse. Next to the port, Bastia’s St. Nicolas Square is a social hotspot with restaurants, concerts, and fairs taking place regularly. Arinella Beach, three kilometers from the center, is a peaceful sandy strip perfect for windsurfing. Bastia is close to Corsica‘s wine region of Patrimonio. It is worth setting aside a day purely for some wine tasting. If desiring that classic beach town aura, Ile Rousse ticks off all the boxes. Fresh produce from farmer’s markets, lounging on white sandy beaches, a trip around the neighborhoods in a toy train or on a Segway, or a hike to the old Genoese tower; it certainly is an incredible family holiday destination.
