Ports of Hydra

There is one port in Hydra, called Hydra Harbor, situated between the Saronic and the Argolic Gulf, slightly separated from the Peloponnese. Located on the northwest side of Hydra is the island’s beautiful main town. The town of Hydra is also the administrative center of the island and there you will find many tourist shops, hotels, and taverns. On Ferryscanner you can easily compare prices or ferry companies and book cheap ferry tickets to Hydra.

Capital & Villages

Hydra Town

The town of Hydra is the capital and main harbor of the island. It is an officially protected settlement due to the historic, cultural, and aesthetic value. According to the law, the construction of new buildings not built in accordance with authentic colors and style is forbidden. The town is full of beautiful mansions built during the 19th century by wealthy merchants and ship owners.

The traditional houses are characterized by their beautiful rooftops and brightly colored windows and doors. Here you will find interesting museums to visit, many cafes and souvenir shops, as well as taverns where you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine. The nightlife here is diverse and exciting. Don’t miss the breathtaking sunset views!

Avlaki

Avlaki is a calm and elegant area, located five minutes by foot from the town center. It is a quiet residential area consisting of a beautiful bay and a small group of houses rising up at a steep angle to the top of the hill. There you will find the Bountouri mansion, which has been recently renovated, standing proudly at the top of the hill. At Avlaki you will also find some of the finest restaurants on the island. The highest point of the area is the Haramis Windmill, sitting directly above the bay.

Kiafa

Kiafa is an endearing combination of narrow, meandering cobblestone alleys and stairways, high walled houses, old ruins, and breathtaking views of Hydra Town. The area is very picturesque and entirely residential, with no taverns and bars. Kiafa was one of the first populated areas of the island as it was located high enough for lookouts to spot any incoming pirate ships. In Kiafa, you will find the Church of Agios Konstantinos (the patron saint of Hydra), built on the site of the martyr’s birthplace.

Kala Pigadia

Kala Pigadia is a quiet residential area situated at the top of the Miaoulia Valley. Named for the local wells that used to provide drinking water, it is a peaceful area that also often serves as a great base for winter hiking. The location is picturesque and an ideal place for artistic expression. There are three resident artists living here, Jacqueline Savidge, Pauline Keaney, and Willem Jan Smit. They invite all aspiring artists to come for a visit and get creative.

Madraki Bay

Madraki Bay is approximately one kilometer along the coast road, heading east from Hydra Harbor. Historically, this bay was protected by fortifications and it served as a major shipbuilding center as well as Hydra’s primary naval port. During the Greek War of Independence, the bay was also used to construct and launch battleships and war vessels. Here in Madraki Bay, you can find cheap accommodation, traditional food, and beautiful beaches.

Best Beaches

Hydra offers a handful of small beaches, each with its own unique charm. From sandy bays to more secluded shelters around the coastline, you can either choose family-friendly organized beaches or more off-the-beaten-track sunspots, all offering unparalleled crystal-clear waters.

Plakes Beach

Plakes Beach is a long beach of sand and pebbles with pristine waters and a wide view of the sea.  It is only a 1.5km walk from Hydra Harbor, heading west. There is also a regular boat service to Plakes from Hydra Harbor if you prefer a more exciting ride on the waves. The shallow waters of the beach are friendly to families with younger kids. Also, there is a restaurant for snacks and refreshments.

Vlychos Beach

Situated 1km west from Hydra Harbor, Vlychos Beach is a well-established favorite for sun lovers. Its sand and pebbles create a beautiful landscape, while its shallow waters are perfect for families. There is a regular boat service from Hydra Harbor to Vlychos Beach for those who do not particularly enjoy walking.

Avlaki Beach

This is a quiet, uncrowded swimming area. Avlaki is not technically considered a beach, but more of a sunbathing area, where the water gets deep very quickly. This aspect makes it rather unsuitable for families with young children. The raw beauty here rewards those who choose to make the climb! The only means of reaching this area is to walk from town.

Bisti Beach

Bisti is a family-friendly beach that offers a sheltered bay, soft pebbles, and shallow waters. Umbrellas and sunbeds are available for rent here, and there are great opportunities for snorkeling. Located on the west side of the island, this is a south-facing bay full of pine trees. Bisti Beach offers a much less commercial feel, while at the same time offering some helpful amenities.

Transportation Around Hydra

The island is vehicle-free, so prepare to walk or bike while you’re here. The only means of heavy transport are mules and donkeys. Donkeys can be found at the port to help you carry your luggage and transport you to a hotel. During summer, water taxis transfer people from Hydra Town to the island’s many beaches.
