All About Serifos

Should a vacation on a unique Aegean island interest you, Serifos is the place to be. Taking a ferry to Serifos is easy, just use Ferryscanner to compare companies and book ferry tickets.

Located between Kythnos and Sifnos, Serifos has great historic and mythological value, with a plethora of picturesque villages, from Chora to Livadi, azure waters, and a rich tapestry of beaches, it provides for a relaxing and fulfilling vacation for those that are in need of distance from the city’s buzz. Also, there are also approximately 116 churches, adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting the island’s patron saints.

Routes and Ferries to Serifos

The shortest ferry journey to Serifos is a 20-minute jaunt from the nearby island of Sifnos. If you are setting off from Piraeus port in Athens, the ferry crossing takes a little longer, ranging from two to four hours. With regular daily connections, getting to Serifos is very easy and you can also connect with other islands from there.

Seajets is one of the major ferry companies that travel to and from the island, and it offers some of the fastest ferries in the Cyclades. Additionally, Aegean Speed Lines is responsible for connecting all of the islands in the Western Cyclades, such as Serifos, Sifnos, and Milos. Other companies that provide regular ferry services to Serifos include Blue Star Ferries and Zante Ferries. Booking your ferry is very easy to do using Ferryscanner.

If you’re coming from abroad, the best way to get to Serifos involves flying to Athens, Santorini, or Mykonos. From one of these destinations, you can easily hop onto a ferry and continue your journey to Serifos.

Ports of Serifos

The only port is Livadi, which happens to be the hub of island life. This is the arrival point when sailing from Athens and Mykonos, as well as from the surrounding islands. On Ferryscanner you can easily compare prices or ferry companies and book cheap ferry tickets to Serifos.

Capital & Villages

Chora

Perched, atop a hill overlooking both island and the Aegean Sea one can find Chora, the island’s capital. Take a stroll down the winding streets and narrow paths and visit the islands’ Archaeological Museum. You might even catch a show, or cultural event taking place in the impressive open-air theatre.

Megalo Livadi

Megalo Livadi owes its existence to the mining past of the islands, and there are still remnants of the past in the railway tracks and bonded wagons. Take in the neoclassical architecture of most buildings, each one with their own unique charms. Megalo Livadi is perfect for a family vacation, thanks to the crystal waters and lack of wind. Enjoy your favorite meze in the traditional tavernas scattered all over the beach.

Livadi

Being the most developed town in Serifos, Livadi boasts a variety of restaurants, taverns, bars, and clubs – almost all with excellent views of the Aegean Sea. Although wild nightlife isn’t typically a characteristic of Serifos, it still offers an interesting mix of quiet spots with a great atmosphere.

Koutalas

In Koutalas, a coastal settlement with not many inhabitants you can find peace and tranquillity as well as the oddly named ‘Kastro tis Grias’ (which roughly translates to ‘Hags Castle’) situated on a hill overlooking the bay of Koutalas. If spelunking is one of your interests you can also explore the cave of Koutalas, to the west of the settlement.

Best Beaches

Serifos definitely doesn’t lack interesting beaches throughout the island for those seeking sea, and sand or votsala (smooth rounded pebbles). From a variety of small coves to the few long and sandy beaches, the island offers you a wide range of options from which to enjoy the crystalline turquoise waters.

Agios Sostis Beach

The Agios Sostis beach is one of the most interesting beaches you can explore while in Serifos, with pristine untouched sand and no umbrellas or sunbeds. This is a beach for those in tune with the natural way of things.

Psili Ammos Beach

This is one of the most popular beaches, enjoyed by the locals and tourists alike, and one look at this beach will tell you why. This Grecian paradise is the perfect spot to spend the day.

Ganema Beach

The remote location and virtually serene waters throughout the year make Ganema a must-visit. With tamarisk trees all over this beach, you can easily find shade and enjoy a relaxing nap by the sea.

Livadakia Beach

This is the beach closest to the port town of Livadi. So even if you’ve come for a day trip, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the sandy beaches of Serifos. If you come to Serifos to camp, Livadakia is close by to an organized campsite.

Kalo Ambeli Beach

Lacking both tamarisk trees and tavernas Kalo Ambeli should be approached cautiously, due to the simple fact that here, you need to come prepared. This means anything from water to snacks and even an umbrella. If, however, you come well-equipped, you will be able to enjoy a tranquil and relaxing beach day.

Transportation Around Serifos

Serifos is approximately 76 kilometers in size, which means you’ll need transportation if you want to get around the island. There are plenty of car rental services, most of which can be found in the port town of Livadi. Hiring a rental car gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and can work out considerably cheaper than taking multiple taxis.

Keep in mind that there are currently only four taxis serving the whole island. So, availability and long wait times is something you can avoid by renting a car of your own. There is also a tourist bus service available in Serifos, which is a more casual and cost-effective way to explore the entire island.
