North Aegean Islands

Ferries to the North Aegean Islands travel east from Athens, past the Cyclades, and closer to Turkey. Several of the islands in this eccentric archipelago are, as a result, Turkish. The ones belonging to Greece include Chios, Samos, Agios Efstratios, Fourni, and the others found below.

Thassos and Samothraki are the northernmost islands in the group. Low on tourist traffic, they are gaining recognition within the outdoor adventure community. Offbeat travelers especially visit Samothraki to climb Fengari peak, the third-highest in Greece. Then there are the vathres, natural rock pools formed at the base of waterfalls, of which there are hundreds around the island. Similarly, Thassos has beautiful golden sand beaches ideal for families. Giola, near the village Astris, is the island’s main attraction. A large, enclosed natural pool next to the sea, you can jump off surrounding rocks for a refreshing dip here.

While the story of Icarus leaves us with plenty to ponder, its namesake island Ikaria is not far behind. With traditional stone houses, natural springs, and sheltered beaches, the island appeals to those wishing for an introspective holiday. If you prefer ancient history, take a boat to Lesvos. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Petrified Forest on this island will amaze you with its plant and tree fossils dating back thousands of years.

When booking ferry tickets to the North Aegean Islands use Ferryscanner, and make sure you consider spending a few days on Limnos. With a trace of history and a dash of mythology, the god of fire Hephaestus had his copper workshop here. Limnos is an exceptional stopover because you have the opportunity to taste Muscat of Alexandria and Limnio, two beautiful wines produced on the island. However, if you desire that archetypal Greek island experience, then visit Psara. Having a proud naval history, the island is home to the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which houses over 400 ancient manuscripts in its library.
