All About Methana

Methana is a small coastal town on the eastern side of the Peloponnese region of mainland Greece. Raw and rugged, this old-world fishing village is the main town of an eponymous volcanic peninsula – a dramatic outcrop with over 32 volcanoes on it. Don’t be dissuaded though; the region has been safely inhabited for thousands of years and the last land eruption was in 230 BCE. Thermal springs, volcanic baths, and nutrient-rich water make for a completely unique and exotic natural landscape, attracting visitors from around the world for its natural healing properties.

The hillsides are covered in dark-green trees, all looking down over the deep blue waters of the nearby Saronic Gulf and its islands. The town of Methana itself is small and quaint, built amphitheatrical-style around a calm and clean port. It is an ideal destination for a weekend retreat or cleansing holiday, where you can make use of the rich array of spas, both natural and organized. Spend your evenings enjoying classic Greek food and drinks on the port side of Methana while relaxing in the laid-back charm of this hidden gem.

The history of Methana goes back thousands of years, with its earliest known settlement dating to around 8000 BCE. The rich, fertile, volcanic land allowed for a strong agricultural community, which occupied an important position in the ancient history of the Peloponnese. During Roman rule, the natural springs were converted into Roman baths, the remains of which can be found in nearby archaeological sites and museums. These gave the town its contemporary name, with the smell of methane still rising from the springs to this day. Methana has retreated into being a peaceful area, visited only by those in the know so enjoy its unique natural beauty, fascinating local culture, and, of course, the exciting volcanoes.

Port of Methana

As a small fishing town, the Port of Methana is one of the central hubs of the area. Rustic, hand-painted fishing boats line the harbor and in the mornings, you can watch the local fisherman heading out for their catch of the day. The port itself is simple yet well developed. Sea traffic lands at the jetty that pokes out into the sea, welcoming ships from Athens and the surrounding islands.

Along the seafront esplanade, you’ll find ticketing agencies, cafés, and a handful of restaurants. It’s a great idea to come down in the evening to watch the sunset over the sea and enjoy some local seafood – caught right in front of where you’re sitting.

Best Beaches

The Methana peninsula is blessed with an array of beaches, both wild and organized, that are all perfect for long sunny days on the Saronic Gulf. You’ll find secluded coves, reddish-brown sands, and the quintessential crystal-clear waters of the Greek islands right here in the Peloponnese.

Limniona Beach

One of the closest organized beaches to the main town is Limniona Beach; a favorite of the locals. Take a half-hour walk or an 8-minute drive along the coast and discover golden sands, pure waters, and a nearby hot spring. There are sunbeds, umbrellas, and an excellent beach bar – perfect for an easy day trip.

Vathi Beach

Take a 12-minute drive toward the pretty fishing village of Vathi and arrive at a small and charming beach sometimes referred to as Magoula. The pebbled waterfront is very laid-back and lined with authentic tavernas and restaurants. The nearby village of Vathi is a wonderful spot to relax after your swim, where you can savor fish and seafood freshly delivered by the little fishing boats that adorn the harbor.

Agios Nikolaos Beach

Agios Nikolaos lies on the north side of Methana, just a 35-minute drive around the coast or up the mountain from the main town. Staring out at the Saronic Gulf, the perfectly still waters are a refreshing deep blue. The beach isn’t particularly organized, so it’s the ideal destination if you wish to get away from the crowds and enjoy a peaceful slice of coastline.

Agios Georgios Beach

Right next to its eponymous village, Agios Georgios beach is a lovely cove offering stunning views over the horizon. It’s a 22-minute drive from the town, after which you’ll find some beach bars, sunbeds, and all you could want from an organized beach.

Dariza Metamorfosis Beach

For those wanting to get away from the peninsula and explore more of the mainland, Dariza Metamorfosis beach is a lovely example of the Peloponnesian coast. Drive for 18-minutes from the town, and discover a dark-pebbled volcanic beach with crystal-clear waters and an excellent range of beach facilities.

Things to Do

Explore the Town

While many tourists tend to head to Methana exclusively for the thermal springs, the town itself is filled with charming corners and interesting spots, making it well worth exploring. Given its location, much of it is built on a steady incline, with lots of winding roads and look-out points. In the morning, head to one of the bakeries to enjoy some local baked goods. Then, make your way up the hill to the Church of Agia Triada, taking in its traditional architecture and vivid icons. Afterward, head down to the center of town to get a feel for the slow, relaxed pace of life. You’ll easily find some great taverns, and there are many accommodation options ranging from economic to boutique.

Visit the Thermal Springs of Methana

No trip to Methana is complete without a soak in these healing waters. Located on the north end of the peninsula, around a 30-minute drive from the town, the Baths of Pausanias are vast pools of sulfur-rich, electric blue water. The springs are particularly popular with some of the older locals, as they are said to be an excellent remedy for rheumatism and arthritis. Alternatively, you’ll find the Hot Springs of Methana only a 3-minute walk away from the port – equally therapeutic but slightly more developed.

Hike Up to the Volcano

For those who want to take in the full effect of the peninsula’s stark beauty, take a hike up to the Methana Volcano. Enjoy the 18-minute drive to the village of Kaimeni Chora to see the largest crater on the peninsula. Then, follow the signposted pathway up towards the volcano, which is around a 1-hour-long hike. There are stunning views of the entire area from the peak, where you can also catch glimpses of the nearby Peloponnesian coastline.

Explore the Village of Vathi

Take a 12-minute drive west of Methana to the quiet village of Vathi, a great place to get a taste of traditional life. On the nearby cliffs, right next to the sea, you’ll find the Church of Krasopanagia, ostensibly built using a mixture of soil and wine. It’s a long walk along the cliffsides to reach it, but once there, you’ll be taken aback by the stunning scenery and fascinating legacy of the church.

Transportation Around Methana

The town of Methana is very small and easily navigable on foot. However, if you’re hoping to make the most of your time here and explore the thermal springs and secluded villages, it’s best to consider private transport.

There’s a reliable taxi network, and you can often find available cabs waiting near the port. There are a few cars and motorcycle rental options in the town, but it’s a good idea to find a car-carrying ferry so you bring a vehicle along with you to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, it’s a lovely idea to rent a bike and cycle your way along the coastline, exploring the rugged, volcanic cliffsides and stunning seashores.
