Phlegraean Islands

An idyllic group of four islands and islets, the Phlegraean Islands lie in the Campania district of Southern Italy. Dotted around the Gulf of Naples, Ischia, Procida, Vivara, and Nisida share a common origin with their creation linked to the super-volcano known as Phlegraean Fields. The archipelago’s name is a nod toward its formation. Also known as Isola Flegree, it comes from the Greek word ‘phlego’ which means ‘to burn’. Interestingly, even though Capri is in the same region, it is not considered a part of the group since its foundation does not resemble that of the Phlegraean Islands.

The archipelago’s location, close to Naples, makes it a popular tourist destination. Therefore, ferry tickets to the Phlegraean Islands are typically in demand during the warm summer months. The largest and most famous of the islands in the group is Ischia. It’s a known film location for movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cleopatra and it promises an exciting vacation packed with relaxation, rejuvenation, and activities.

Tourists visiting Ischia can enjoy its many beaches, hike up to Mount Epomeo, admire Castello Aragonese, and walk around the town’s beautiful gardens. There’s also the opportunity to relish local culinary preparations like the rabbit stew. However, the highlight of an Ischia vacation is its numerous thermal springs. Underwater volcanic activity results in therapeutic waters visitors can soak and swim in at various thermal parks.

The second largest island, Procida, is known worldwide for its Marina Corricella, featuring picture-perfect, pastel-colored fishermen’s houses stacked one over another. An astounding sight for travelers arriving with ferry tickets to the Phlegraean Islands, the port is also the island’s liveliest hub featuring bars, restaurants, and hotels.

Still devoid of mass tourism, Procida is an authentic Italian escape brimming with vintage appeal. A walk around its old town, Terra Murata, is a must, as is a stroll on Via Roma, packed with local eateries and shops. Other attractions in Procida include the 16th century Palazzo D’Avalos, Santa maria delle Grazie Church, built in 1679, and the island’s scenic black sand beaches.

The tiny isle of Nisida has a 2km coastline and connects with Mainland Italy via a stone bridge. Used by the Romans for holidays, Brutus and Lucullus had their vacation villas here. Moreover, many believe that the conception of the plot to murder Ceaser was first formed on Nisida. It was a prison since the 1800s, and the island now houses a juvenile detention center and an Air Force Academy. Although the public cannot visit most of the island, you can still walk around in some specific areas, such as Nisida’s small marina for private vessels.

Protected since 1974 and a nature reserve since 2002, Vivara is a tiny spot of lush, green land with a 3km coastline. Home to rabbits, various plant species, and birds, one requires a special permit to visit here. However, tourists can freely rent boats from Procida, sail around Vivara and swim in the turquoise waters surrounding the islet.

Whether taking an island-hopping trip around the Phlegraean Islands or planning a weekend break from Naples, you can easily book your ferry tickets to Ischia or Procida online via Ferryscanner.
