All About Ventspils
A destination anomaly of sorts, Ventspils is an extraordinary metropolis in the north-western Courland region of Latvia. Its importance as an industrial hub is unquestionable. Moreover, the 6th largest city in Latvia has a solid cultural background where festivals and concerts are a regular feature on the yearly events calendar.
This city of nearly 40,000 inhabitants dates back to the early 1200s, but Ventspils manages to merge the old with the new impeccably. Stretching on both sides of the River Venta, walk around, and you’ll witness an unconventional mix of architectural styles. From the Soviet district and remnants of the Teutonic Knights to beautiful wooden houses near the sea, the buildings here speak of Ventspils’ diverse history.
Today, the city is on a mission to become the next big family destination in Europe. By initiating novel ideas such as a non-monetary currency called Vents and by offering a host of kid-friendly excursions, Ventspils is slowly transforming from a Latvian hidden gem to a bonafide seaside holiday hotspot.
Routes and Ferries to Ventspils
Ventspils proposes an eccentric travel opportunity, and there is no better way to embark on this adventure than by taking a boat to the city. Water lovers can book ferry tickets to Ventspils from Nynäshamn in Sweden, through Ferryscanner, for a memorable 8 hour 30-minute crossing of the Baltic Sea. Stena Line operates the vessels on this route, with 12 sailings per week, giving holidaymakers ample choices for planning their voyages.
Another alternate to reach Ventspils is by air. However, it is a slightly longer approach. Although situated 3.5km from the center, Ventspils International Airport is only a single runway airfield with no commercial flights. So, travelers have to arrive at Riga and then take the bus or drive to Ventspils, which can take a good two to four hours, depending on the traffic.
Bus travel within Latvia is quite popular and a cheaper mode of transportation between cities. You can get a bus from Riga or Liepāja for under €10.
Port of Ventspils
Ventspils is amongst the most revered seaports in the Baltic Sea. Its ice-free, deep water disposition makes it an excellent dock for vessels of all sizes. The port has 57 piers that see daily traffic of cargo and container ships as well as ro-ro ferries. As a result, Ventspils Port has a significant hand in developing Latvian industries, transportation, and tourism.
Passengers arriving with ferry tickets to Ventspils disembark further up into the mouth of River Venta, at the conveniently located ferry terminal. First-time visitors should stop by the tourist office next door and pick up a free map of the city for easy navigation.
