Menorca

Lying off the east coast of Spain in the warm embrace of the Mediterranean Sea, Menorca is part of the Balearic Islands. Together with Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, it forms an autonomous province of Spain.

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, Menorca is more relaxed than its sister islands. However, there is still plenty to attract the visitor to its glorious shores. A blend of island and mainland Spanish culture pervades its towns, as can be experienced during the series of summer festes (feasts) which honor local patron saints. This is also the time of year to sample the island’s favorite tipple, pomada, which is made from cutting locally-produced gin with bitter lemon or lemonade. In addition, Menorca isn’t short of excellent beaches and is also a regular feature on bucket lists for hikers and nature lovers.

Those seeking ferry tickets to Menorca will be happy to learn that there are two potential ports of entry on the island, Ciutadella de Menorca and Mahon. Ciutadella is located on the western side of the island, looking towards Mallorca and mainland Spain. Mahon lies on the opposite coast and is the island’s capital. Both Ciutadella and Mahon provide sea links with Mallorca and the cities of the rest of Spain.

The journey between Menorca and Mallorca takes only a couple of hours. They usually depart from Ciutadella and arrive at Alcudia. Two regional ferry companies battle it out for passengers, with both Balearia and Transmediterranea handling services between the two islands. This means that in total there are somewhere in the region of 60 sailings each week. Running every day of the week throughout the year, they average out at 8 services per day.

To reach the Iberian Peninsula, those thinking about ferry tickets to Menorca also have two options. But these options refer to a choice of departure and arrival ports as well as ferry companies. During the high season, roughly coinciding with the months of May through to October, there are around eight sailings per week in either direction between Mahon and Barcelona. There are a further 14 per week to Ciutadella. These Barcelona routes are run by both Balearia and Transmediterranea. In addition, Transmediterranea has at least once a week sailing in either direction between Mahon and Valencia, with the journey scheduled to last just half a day.
