All About Los Cristianos

Situated on the southern coast of Tenerife, Los Cristianos is well placed to allow exploration of not just this island, but several other destinations in the Canary Islands too. Unlike the nearby towns, Los Cristianos was not chosen as the site for new tourist development during the 1970s and 1980s.

Instead, it is a town of more than 20,000 people with a history as a small fishing village, and much of this original charm has been retained to the present day. In addition to traditional Canary Island architecture, visitors also have the opportunity to hit the beach, head out on whale watching tours, and enjoy the range of food and drink options in and around the town.

If that’s got you itching to visit Los Cristianos you’re not alone. The town’s attractions mean it’s really very easy to get hold of ferry tickets to Los Cristianos, although they do tend to sell out during the peak summer season. Using Ferryscanner, you can discover all the available routes and departures, and then book your ferry tickets to Los Cristianos. It’s as simple as that!

Routes and Ferries to Los Cristianos

As a cluster of islands flying the flag of Spain but lying just off the Atlantic coast of Morocco, public ferries are still an important way of getting between the Canary Islands. All the routes for ferry tickets to Los Cristianos we mention here are operated by Naviera Armas. This company is one of Spain’s top ferry companies, which was founded in 1941 in Lanzarote.

The shortest route from Los Cristianos is the one that takes just an hour to reach the volcanic cone of La Gomera. The second-smallest of the main Canary Islands, there are 19 sailings between Los Cristianos and La Gomera on an average week in peak season, which equates to more than two departures each day in either direction. The price of a ticket for an adult passenger on foot is around €40.

Alternatively, you might like to discover the wonders of El Hierro, the furthest west of the islands, and therefore offering unrivaled ocean vistas and adventures. The journey here from Los Cristianos still only lasts 2.5 hours on average, with at least one sailing per day. Tickets can usually be purchased for €54.50.

Finally, it takes only 30 minutes longer to reach La Palma instead. Not to be confused with the town of Las Palmas, the island of La Palma is another fine Canary Islands destination, combining quaint streets with the status as an important biosphere reserve. There are up to six voyages to La Palma in either direction in a week, with a seat costing around €55.

Port of Los Cristianos

The busiest passenger port anywhere in the Canary Islands, the port of Los Cristianos sees up to two million passengers pass through its terminals in any given year. The main port sits within a small natural bay partially protected to the south by a manmade seawall. It is from this wharf that all the ferries dock.

Just a few minutes on foot from the center of the town, the area is surrounded by beaches and is within walking distance of a range of hotels and places to eat. You’ll also find sailing schools and diving centers based within the port.

Best Beaches

Despite the ability to travel anywhere in the world, the Canary Islands remain some of the most popular vacation spots around. The reasons for this are simple. Not only do islands like Tenerife have a terrific choice of beaches, but also a climate that provides few surprises.

Los Cristianos Beach

This wide sand beach sits immediately to the east of the port. The shelter of the seawall makes it a good option for those looking to swim, while the facilities are also second to none, including year-round lifeguards, beach volleyball courts, and a children’s play area.

Las Vistas Beach

On the opposite side of the port, Las Vistas Beach doesn’t have the protection of the seawall. However, that doesn’t stop locals and visitors from enjoying either the incoming waves or the fine sand. Flying a Blue Flag that denotes its cleanliness, it’s perhaps the most popular beach on this side of Tenerife.

Playa de los Tarajales

A short distance east on the outskirts of Los Cristianos in the El Rincon neighborhood, Playa de los Tarajales is the place to head if you prefer solitude over water sports. There are no formal facilities on the beach, and a few more rocks than the other beaches on our list so far. Its seclusion makes it a top choice for nudists.

Things to Do

With some of the warmest temperatures experienced in Tenerife and long hours of daylight during the summer months, there’s plenty of time to combine a trip to the beach with some of the town’s other attractions.

Visit Los Cristianos Market

Part traditional marketplace and part craft market, you’ll never quite know what you’ll find until you pay a visit for yourself. Even if you don’t find anything to remember your stay by, the Los Cristianos market is well worth attending for the atmosphere that soon builds.

Hike Chayofita Mountain

The Canary Islands are well-known as a hiking destination, and even if you’re not a top-notch walker with lots of experience, there’s still the ability to hike to the summit of Chayofita Mountain overlooking Los Cristianos. With decent footwear, either of the two routes to the top is simple enough to complete.

Go Dolphin and Whale Watching

It’s not only us humans you enjoy splashing about in the waters around Los Cristianos. Several trusted operators also run dolphin and whale watching experiences from the harbor. So why not slap on the sunscreen and head out for a day on the waves with some of its most intelligent creatures?

Transportation Around Los Cristianos

The heart of Los Cristianos is so small that it’s unlikely you’ll need to take advantage of public transportation. If you’re looking to travel to some of the furthest beaches or tourist attractions, the island’s bus network is extensive, although arrivals can be limited. The tourist office will be able to supply you with the latest timetables so that you’re not wasting your precious vacation standing at bus stops.

A better alternative for many is using the town’s taxis. Since they are limited in number, it’s normally best to pre-arrange a pick-up if your trip is time-sensitive. For example, your arrival to the port for a ferry departure.
